Arthur Ashe: Champion for Equality – by Wendy Molina – English 61

In English 61, we are reading a sixties novel, and my students are writing about the discrimination, racism, inequality of a tumultuous decade.  Many of our papers touch upon the Civil Rights Movement.  We talk about how we got from there to here, and how we should move forward.

Wendy chose to write about Arthur Ashe.  She recognizes Ashe’s athletic distinctions, but her essay was more about his achievments off the court.  Ashe grew up in the racially divided South.  He could not attend the same schools or churches as white people.  When he rode the bus, he was forced to sit in back.  In her essay, Wendy writes with great admiration for a man to overcome such challenges in life. In 1968, Ashe became the the first black man to win a major tennis championship – The U.S. Open.  Wendy believes we all have something to learn from Arthur Ashe.  Throughout his life,  he fought against social injustice.  He was Champion for the People.
