I’ve created a discussion board on Canvas called “Book Out of Your Past.” Here I tell my students the selection they submit will tell us a lot about them. You know, like “You are what you read.” I’m not asking for a book review, but I want my students to reflect on their reading experience. Where were they when they read this book? Who told them about it? What did they get out of it?

Below I share my post for Emily Rapp. That’s her on the cover. Emily Rapp is the “Poster Child.” When she was six years old, the March of Dimes put her image on their posters and calendars. She would proudly proclaim to her audience, “I might have one leg, but I’m not disabled.” I love this book. Emily was born with a congenital defect that required her left leg to be amputated just below the knee. Her book has been called a memoir of disability, but that is not the way she describes it. She writes of living life to the fullest. She is a true inspiration.
