SI! SE PUEDE! – by Cassandra Aguirre

I read that Cesar Chavez once struggled to reach an Arizona crowd of farmworkers with his UFW message.  He had just described how the strike was forcing growers to change in California.  But here in Arizona, the workers told him, it was different:  “No se puede, no se puede!”  They said in Arizona, they play by different rules.  That may have been true, but so did Dolores Huerta who got right back in the Arizona farmers’ faces:  “Si! Si, se puede!”  An everytime, the Arizona farmworkers began to respond with “No..” Dolores would scream, “SI!”  You could say this was the birth place of one of the movement’s most successful slogans.  “Si! Si Se Puede!…SI!  SI SE PUEDE!!”  Before anyone knew what was happening, everyone was joining in with Cesar and Dolores.  For the benefit of everyone, they didn’t back down.   “SI!  SE PUEDE!”

Cassandra’s research paper is a family affair.  She writes of her parents’ involvement in the UFW.  Cassandra is all in.  Her parents paved the way for her educational opportunities.  She plans to study political science at the next level.  “Si! Se Puede!”  “Si!  Se Puede!”
