On my shelves here in Mexicali, I have books written by or about people with the names that end in “man”, like, Goldman, Zimmerman, and Hoffman. I don’t know if you have read of any of them or know anything about them, but from their names you can draw two conclusions: 1) they are Jewish; or 2) they are famous superheroes, as in Superman, Batman, Spider-man. Jaja. I’m reading a Patricia Highsmith biography right now. About the same time two young Jews created the mythology of Superman, Patricia began her writing career for a company that would become Marvel comics. Not surprisingly – when you read her later novels – her superhero was named the Black Terror. Below I try to introduce my students to the concept of Alter Ego. It’s not just for the comic books…
