Pedro Martinez is/was my favorite baseball player. Pedro Mentiras is a big liar. ( From Spanish, “Mentiras” translates to “Lies” ) The idea to write about Pedro Mentiras came to me from watching the Republican and Democratic presidential conventions. Politifact reports that 75 percent of what comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth is suspicious. This means much of his rhetoric can be rated between “false,” “mostly false,” and “pants on fire” crazy. Hilary Clinton rates out to 29 percent. This week my students were asked to argue for lowering the voting age from 18 to 16. I fear for them – the politics they are exposed to is all entertainment, like The Simpsons, Stand-Up Comedy, America’s Got Talent. I don’t know where they go for the truth. Below I write about a short-story anthology I’m reading called Cuentos de Mujeres Solas. Pedro Mentiras shows up in every story. But you know what? Truth is stranger than fiction.
