I think every English professor should be his/her own book club. I live in Mexicali, and when I’m invited over to a house of a friend or neighbor, I don’t see a lot of books around. I have the feeling many of my students come to class with a very limited reading experience. I don’t emphasize literature study in my courses, but I try to share my excitement for books whenever I can. That’s an important part of the job, says me. If students are to develop their critical thinking skills, it won’t come from memorizing passages out of their textbooks. It will come from reading on their own. This week, I’ve convinced my students to join me in a campus book discussion of The Girl on a Train. I’m bringing pan dulces and juice. Woo-Hoo! Let’s Party!
