“Suffering with a Purpose” by Cecelia De La Torre

Cecilia begins and ends her paper on bipolar disorder with the tragic genius of Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent was so bright with spirit and creativity  that he could sometime complete an entire painting in just one day. It's also important to note that at the height of his productivity he suffered from delusions and hallucinations. He chewed on tubes of his own oil paint.  At one point he lopped off the bottom of his ear with a shaving knife. He was eventually committed to an asylum – to protect him from himself –  where he painted some 300 works including many we most remember him for:  Irises, Roses and Starry Night.
