If you are reading this post, CONGRATULATIONS to YOU! This means you are still in the FIGHT! Now, we have returned from Spring Break, it's time to begin putting our Sixties Research Papers together. With each new class, I will teach you new SKILL to help you SUCCEED – We will take it ONE-STEP-at-a-TIME! I know. I know. For many you, this class is your first college-level English class, so you couldn't really know what to expect. Believe me when I tell you this: I've been there. It may be a long time ago, but I know how it feels. I know some of you may feel overwhelmed. But, that's exactly why I'm writing you this message. All I ask of you is to be RESILIANT.
I MEAN – THINK ABOUT WHO YOU ARE – WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR LIFE? – WHAT KIND OF PERSON DO YOU WANT TO BE?
Take the time you need to identify the “why” behind your work! Do you want to have to repeat this class for not completing the required assignments? Resilience is the ability to ‘bounce back’ after a setback, or keep positive in the face of challenges. This week we begin Jay's BALD AMBITION Tour – If you want it ( THE GRADE!) you can have it – It's time to reach out and GRAB IT!

Janis Joplin: A Rock ‘N’ Roll Pioneering Spirit
In 1965, Janis found home in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. This area was known as a mecca for young hippies. Young people dressed in bright colors, beads and feathers were coming in from all over the world, and they listened to loud, crazy psychedelic rock. Janis jammed with the Grateful Dead, Country Joe and the Fish and the Jefferson Airplane. Her rough and raucous voice pushed the music to the edge. “They loved to see her get crazy,” said Joe McDonald of Country Joe and the Fish. “It was part of her image: the wild woman, the blues mama” (Angel 42). In this fashion, Janis become one of the first women to ever to take center stage in the Rock ‘n Roll world. She was a pioneering spirt. Tragically, she died of a heroin overdose at age 27.
What caused Janis so much distress? For all of her brilliance, she would always be an outcast. In high school Janis was bullied and laughed out of town for being different. Her classmates didn’t like her affection for “black” music, poetry, or art. They were threatened by her independence. At her concerts, she once said, she heard her name screamed by thousands of people, but most often she went home to a silent, lonely apartment. In this environment Janis began to look more to drugs and alcohol than to her music. One one hand, she was bold, adventurous, defiant. On the other, she was frightened and insecure. What a horrible loss. But, today Janis is an important historical figure for her her ability to succeed in an industry dominated by men; Her music, her style, and her voice has inspired generations of young women artists to step up and reach for their dreams.
In 1967, Janis broke through with Big Brother and the Holding Company – she became known as the Queen of Psychedelic Soul (Smith). This came right about the time of the Summer of Love in San Francisco. Janis found herself right in the middle of her element. Hippies. Drugs. Music. She flew her "Freak Flag" with pride. In Big Brother and the Holding Company, she found herself a future. She had the bold voice to match the band's instrumental genius. They took the stage at the Monterey Pop Festival in June, and the world would never be the same. The Monterey Pop Festival will always remain famous for superstar artists like the Who and Jimi Hendrix. But not many who were there will forget Janis’s performance. She sang “Ball and Chain” as only she could (Schall). Janis took an old blues song and made it hers. She sang it at her pace and in her voice. “Janis – who never wanted to do anything formulaic, typical or predictable – was starting out in her career and it was a very important moment for her,” her manager Clive Davis told The Guardian in 2014. “I think it was a little too formal and maybe corporate just to sign a document […]. So she asked to sleep with me to make it more personal.” Davis later said he never slept with her, but Janis was GREAT all the same (Schall).
