At the time of publication, Jonathan is just finishing the novel Motorcycle on the Sea of Tranquility in his English 61 class. It’s a story about a young Latina coming of age in the year 1969. When her brother returns from Vietnam broken and distant, Yoli tries to make sense of the chaos in her world. From this story, Jonathan may have been inspired to develop a historical research paper based on the legendary Woodstock three-day concert held in upstate New York August 15–18, 1969. Jonathan captures the tumult of the times. After all, this was the height of the Vietnam era. Students were rioting in the streets in opposition to the war. Race riots were spreading across the country. Rebellion was in the air. But, despite these headlines, 400,000 young bonded together for three days of peace and music. Jonathan’s writing reflects both historical insight and personal admiration. Why couldn’t something like Woodstock ever happen today? ( When we really need it! )
