Every day I scour my textbooks for lessons and activities to bring into the classroom. As soon as I’m done with that, I look to my students to share their own experience and perspective in our discussions. It’s called inclusion. It’s about giving marginalized and underrepresented students a voice. I challenge them to step up and speak out. In the shadow of President Trump’s decision to revoke DACA, many students have begun to worry about their future. Their financial aid is threatened. Their status is up in the air. Now more than ever, they need to talk. Writing about it will give them focus.
Below I share my most recent blog post for my reading of A Dolores Huerta Reader. In class, I showed a clip from the new documentary of her life “Dolores.” I was saddened by the lack of familiarity my students showed for her activism. I’m hoping many of the young women in my classrooms will write about her in their research papers. The men, too. We all have something to learn from Dolores. "¡Si se puede!"
