The Climb to Nowhere: The Tragic Journey of Candido in The Tortilla Curtain – by Maricruz Silva Negrete – English 1A

I'm not sure if Miley Cyrus knows her Greek mythology.  Sisyphus was a king punished for his greed and deceit – he was forced to push a boulder up to the top of a hill, only to see it roll down back upon him, over and over and over, for all eternity.  Miley's song "The Climb" could be about Sisyphus, or it could be about Candido in the novel The Tortilla Curtain.  Candido is a hard-working Mexican immigrant who faces one obstacle after another in pursuit of the American Dream.  Every time he gets knocked down, he gets right back up.  Miley probably knows something about that.  Maricruz recognized "The Climb" as the perfect selection to reperesent The Tortilla Curtain.
