Today I’m celebrating July 4 by grading narratives from my summer school class. I’ve asked students to write about an experience in their lives that has shaped them. Many of them write of the challenges starting fresh in a new country. They discuss what they left behind. They explain the challenges of learning a new language and culture. They don’t care what Donald Trump has to say. There is plenty of insight and excitement in their writing voices. They believe if they work hard enough, they will succeed. How cool is that?
