I’ve been reading Ana Castillo’s anthology Goddess of the Americas. Many of the writers featured in this collection appear on my shelves here in my house in Mexicali. I’m also reading more than a few student essays about teen pregnancy. One day, I would like to share Rosario Ferré’s “The Battle of the Virgins” in the classroom. We live in a very conservative area. Regarding their sex education, my students write about “abstinence-only” programs. Ferré’s personal narrative is one we shouldn’t abstain from. It could make a difference in their young lives. We need diverse writing in the classroom that reflects the culture and background of our students.
