La hija y la virgen

Summer Reading anyone?  I discovered Luis Alberto Urrea a few years back when I was teaching in a small elementary school in a poor neighborhood of Tijuana.  Much of the hard, rough and tumble life he describes in his book Across the Wire, I could see right over the school gates. This summer, I read two more of his works: La Hija de la Chuparossa and Rumbo al Hermoso Norte.  En Espanol!  Many of my students write of their family struggles to make it in this country.  From these books, I ‘ll have more than a few excerpts to ignite important discussion in class.
