Music across the Generations

Recently in my English classes, we have been examining the lyrics to our favorite songs to use in our writing.   To my surprise, many of my students are coming back to me with lines from such diverse sources as Pink Floyd and/or Marvin Gaye.   When I ask them where and how they found these songs, they tell me that’s what their parents listen to.  Wow.  That makes me feel old but inspired at the same time. How often does that happen where students at this level are running home to share their ideas from class?  Here I found a classic bolero in a Spanish-language novel I’m reading.  I bet you many of my students know of it.  I’ll bet you their parents do too.  I would love to hear their discussion around the dinner table…
