When I decided to ask my students to write a rhetorical analyisis, I thought, OMG, how would I go about it? They would have to choose an argument to analyze. They would have to search magazines, websites, newspapers for important “cultural conversations.”
So, here is what I did: I decided I want to write about what is interesting to me at the moment. At the time I was reading the tragic story of Judy Garland. You know, Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Right from the beginning, the studios worked her to the bone. They fed her pills to for energy. They gave her pills to sleep. As a child star, she was a money-maker. She was like a golden goose for MGM. Sadly, she died of a drug and alcohol addiction at age 47.
So, I typed into Google, “argument to protect child stars.” This is what I found: “Manipulation and Exploitation of Child Stars” It’s GREAT! It details the degradation of Miley Cyrus. It leads the reader to important information and other horrible examples.
